Each October, the Dame family and their lineage round up friends, relatives and innocent bystanders for a whirlwind weekend of fall festivities all centered around one thing: turning 12-15 bushel of apples into sweet and saucy apple butter.
The tradition began in 1990, when matriarch Juanita (Mema) Dame sought to recreate with her children and grandchildren her memories of making apple butter in the foothills of Virginia where she grew up. She acquired a 40-gallon copper kettle, ordered several bushel of fruit, and the rest is history!
Our Mema passed quietly at home on October 13, 2011 — after ensuring we had ordered the apples.
